Football Fundraising - A Better Way to Trash Talk

On January 19, 2014, the Seahawks beat the 49ers to win their way into the Super Bowl.  Now, I'm not a fan of either team (Go Pack Go!), but I was impressed when I heard about the pranks being pulled between teams.  First, some Seahawks fans hired a plane to fly over Candlestick Park with a taunting banner.  Excess money went to the Wounded Warrior Project.  Then, 49ers fans retaliated via a billboard that said: "Got Lombardis?"  Excess funds from this prank went to the Seattle Children's Hospital.

Finally, leading up to the big game last Sunday, it was an all-out battle.  Seattle and San Francisco competed to see which fan base could donate more money to a nonprofit in the opponent's city.  49er fans went nuts trying to get more donations for the Seattle Children's Hospital than Seahawks fans could for the UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital.  In the end, both teams and hospitals won.  Seattle raised over $75,000 for San Francisco's hospital, while San Francisco raised almost $35,000 for their rival's.  In addition, an anonymous fan promised to match donations, and then the 49ers and Seahawks organizations announced their matches as well.  That $100,000 in fan donations has now become over $400,000!  That's a win!
