Happy 50th to the Peace Corps!

March 1st marked the 50th Anniversary of the Peace Corps, which started as a challenge by then Senator John F. Kennedy to students to serve their country by volunteering in developing countries.  Over 200,000 people have now served for peace in 139 host countries, helping in areas such as education, community development, health, and the environment.

Volunteers give a commitment of 27 months for training and work, and all age levels are welcome to apply.  A Whispered Wish has two friends abroad at the moment: a 22-year-old recent college graduate who is an English teacher in Rwanda, and a 69-year-old former talent executive teaching English and philanthropy in Macedonia.  These two strong females will benefit from their world experiences, and the wisdom they bring home will be valuable in spreading the word of peace.

Visit the Celebrating 50 Years website to learn more about the 50th Anniversary of the Peace Corps and local events in your area.  If you would like more about the program or to volunteer, visit http://www.peacecorps.gov.
