Is Philanthropy Cool?

CNN released a story today about Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO and founder of Facebook, and his plans to announce a $100 million donation to the Newark public school system.  Zuckerberg will supposedly make this announcement on the popular Oprah Winfrey Show on Friday.  Click here to read the full story.

A number of media organizations are questioning Zuckerberg's motives, but does it really matter?  $100 million can do a world of good, regardless of whether it is being used to court goodwill in the press.  There have been a number of accusations about Zuckerberg, the founding of Facebook, and where the original idea came from, but what matters is that this whiz kid is making a $100 million dollar example to other whiz kids -- philanthropy is cool and important.

Today's millionaires are younger and more socially interconnected.  With the creation of the internet and social media sites, it is even easier to brag about what causes one supports and donates to.  This great example will hopefully encourage other young millionaires to make a big difference too.
